While Celebrations Catering did not participate in the Wedding Expo in St. Augustine this past weekend, the opportunity arose for me to make the 1.5 hour drive and do some behind the scenes work.  I  decided to invite David, my other half, for a retreat weekend at the World Golf Village, where the  wedding show was being held.  We checked into our luxury suite early in the day, spent the first half of the day by the pool, then met up with a few of the Gainesville vendors who were exhibiting at the show.

Marty Loos, from AVI Photography,  is the main reason I got to spend this sunshiny weekend away from Gainesville.  In an effort to give the AVI booth it’s rightful, colorful scene at the show, Marty, David and I spruced up his HOT PINK AND BLACK booth to match Marty’s “sales” tux!  (it was black and had hot pink accents, and he wore the happy-feet converse shoes!)

Melissa Margarita from Masterpiece Weddings, joined us at the pool, and also found it a good idea to take the Saturday away from home and spend it at this luxury hotel!

I caught up with Angela, from A’vie Weddings and Events, as she was standing on her table decorating her corner booth.

Dan Hathcockwas there from Gainesville too, with an extravagant wedding display that his crew worked on for many hours!  I’m sure it was the center of attention for brides all day long!

I was in awe of the amount of work vendors put into these wedding shows, and was happy to be a guest at this one.  Everything was beautiful and what a nice sunny day for brides to be out vendor shopping, no rain and clear skies!

“Wine-Down” Wednesday:

August 26, 2009

Tonight a small group of Gainesville’s wedding vendors gathered for socializing at the Tioga Town Square, to chat and talk shop.  Many of us rarely  have the opportunity to actually converse with each other when we’re not sweating, rushing, and super multi-tasking, so this evening of just sitting around some cocktail tables together found us lighthearted and quite generous with our opinions and personal open-ness.

The group met at Dionysus Wine Bar, where we pushed a group of pub tables into one family-style table, and perched alongside each other comfortably, sipping wine and nibbling on crostinis.  Most of us drank red wine, and most of us admitted we know little about wines, in spite of the wedding business that we are all heavily involved in, where wine is frequently a big part of what we do.

Michael Patterson, my new event assistant, joined me earlier tonight for dinner at Blue Highway.  We met Layla Ruffino, the owner/manager, and eagerly admitted to her that the meal and the festive atmosphere there was exceptional.  In the food business, one is always happy when there is a new successful restaurant in town, somewhere we can frequent, and count on to be good again with future visits.  Her necklace is worth mentioning, made of nails, so I had to take a picture.

Later at the mixer, I met a few new people (in person finally, and not just on facebook).  Shena and Jeff Hays were there, from Platinum Digital Video,  Noelle Raimondo from A’vie,  and Jessica Slane  and  Kari (husband Andrew too) from Solutions all chatted me up.  I  totally soaked up their young energy!  Inspiring!

I talked quite awhile with Dan Hathcock, Unforgettable Events, and ended up ordering a glass of his suggested wine, which was an excellent recommendation!

The group gathering was simple and easy-going, and I think we’ll do it again. (thank you Jessica for initiating this social!)

Enjoying your peers and viewing them as allies, as partners in our addiction to the driving force of the  Gainesville event business,  as friends who can relate to the late nights, the long days, and the seasonal schedules.   The various event professions that we all have chosen are never easy, never clearly defined and never autonomous.   Together, we all make a beautiful wedding, our goals the same, to make the bride happy.  It’s nice to know each other better because of tonight’s social!

Austin Cary Memorial Forest is a 2,080 acre teaching and research forest located northeast of Gainesville. Celebrations Catering  often provides  catering for meetings  at this quiet location.  For an all-day gathering, you can order breakfast buffets, beverage service, snacks and meals, even barbecues!   Meeting planners recognize the quiet, non-interruptive nature of the Austin Cary location and enjoy the peacfulness of the surrounding woods.    It is a beautiful place for all types of events, meetings, weddings and parties.  The location is only slightly off the beaten path, about 8 miles from downtown Gainesville.

Nice for taking breaks during a long day of meetings!

Kayla will marry Chris Keith on October 9th, at the historic Thomas Center.  Today we met to pick out linen colors and walk through the building to discuss some wedding details.  She selected black and ivory, ALWAYS LOVELY, with a sheer accent color of a pale peach/pink blush.  We’ll set a mock table for her soon, but today we wanted to take the plans for her big day from start to finish, and we did.  It took us over two hours, but we all felt a relief when we finished, as if a big part of the decisions-making was confirmed today.  Here’s a peak at our meeting, pictures of the mock up will post asap.

David is my fiance.  He has an unusual career that I find difficult, when asked, to explain.  Plus, he’s out of town so much that most people think I’m a single workaholic.  Partly true, but there is a live, loving man in my life, coincidentally he’s a workaholic too!  While a blog for Celebrations may not seem the appropriate place to introduce and explain him and his job, at least I can once and for all show and tell what he does for a living,  what he does for my company, and what he does for me.

I never actually gave him any live on-line credit before, and it’s way past over due!  I am now publicly thanking him for all the amazing things he does for me and for Celebrations and for Cafe C, and  I am recognizing that he does everything for us while he’s working madly at his own career.  Now is the perfect and deserving opportunity to highlight  the exceptional work by this wonderful man in my life.

David is a designer, an artist, and a creator of anything you can imagine.  He’s the guy that can bring to life a concept, anything you bring up over dinner or a cocktail,  or even just in passing.  He’ll draw your abstract idea on a napkin (which he does at nearly every meal we have together), and  then he actually makes the concept  into a reality… no matter what it is (a three-month sliding wall-calendar display, a decorative box for your deceased pet’s ashes, a piece of furniture, custom front doors, my offices, and even a replica of a Jackson Pollack painting)   The best part is that the objects he creates are always even better than the those you were thinking of  in your head.  He measures everything twice and his project design drawings are frame-able works of art.

For Creative Kingdoms, his employer, he does the same thing I just described, but on a much, much bigger scale.  Remember that this is me talking, I’m sure he has more technical terms to describe his profession… but the way I see it… he meets with a bunch of idea men, computer geeks, technical gurus, designers, artists, and the like, who make a living producing a game called Magic Quest.  This game is sort of a Harry Potter meats Disney type magic wand game.   The fabrication is designed and built in Orlando, per David’s drawings and  supervision, then trucked to the installation location where David travels with a crew to detail out the final specifics of the game.  Most importantly, there’s a magic wand, big computerized dragons and Fairies, Pixies and the like and it’s way too complicated for my brain, but very popular with kids.  Points are involved!

I’ve traveled many times to see David’s work, places like Missouri, Virginia, Tennessee, Texas, New Jersey, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Upper Michigan…all places where large kid-friendly resorts are very popular.  I’m always amazed at the complexity and popularity of the whole magic game business, and how families afford the expense of a weekend at the Great Wolf Lodge and all it’s amenities.

Here’s a peek at David’s Work Life!

And can I end with… If I showed you pictures of EVERYTHING DAVID HAS BUILT FOR ME AND THE CELEBRATIONS COMPANIES, I WOULD RUN OUT OF SPACE ON THE BLOG!  Thank you David, you are amazing and dear to my heart and my success.

THINK PINK!

August 24, 2009

I spotted a Pink Porsche Limo while driving to work this morning.  As always, when something catches my attention, I grab my camera and shoot it.  Today, the guy driving in front of me, in a yellow muscle car, didn’t like it… he followed me to my destination and demanded I explain taking pictures of his car tag.  Luckily, I was driving a Celebrations Catering vehicle and had on a company logo shirt, so my explanation of wanting to blog about the pink limo was somewhat believable.  I have to wonder why he was so paranoid and what fun he may have been up to? I was “innocently” thinking,  ”hey I didn’t know AP had a new pink limo”… “how exciting for future bridesmaid parties!”.   Better watch myself and the camera addiction before I get in trouble!

I eat, sleep and breathe catering and event design!  I can’t stop planning the next event, even before it’s booked, I see everything around me that “could” be a wedding or event prop.  For example… I drove to Orlando yesterday and stopped half way at Wildwood, just before getting on the Turnpike… You know that big place with the neon orange signs and lots of fake oranges, you can see it from the moon practically!  I was only going to get a soda, but ended up grabbing the camera after I saw these cute little miniature bags of candy oranges, thinking about how perfect they were for a Florida-Themed Wedding Reception (we have several coming up, always thinking).  Then I saw the grapefruit spoons and envisioned an appetizer, then some pecans… a dessert, some Gator heads, a cool cook station with Gator Bites, and then I spotted the fresh orange juice, a signature drink… and don’t forget the taffy, boiled peanuts and peaches, whew!

For Sale, one cheesy Florida Theme Wedding, all purchased from the Wildwood Gas Station, no on-line ordering required.  I think we could actually pull it off!  You decide?
